Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects not only kidney function but also bone metabolism, creating a complex network of hormonal and mineral imbalances. These changes can lead to chronic kidney disease–mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD), a condition associated with bone abnormalities, vascular calcification and increased cardiovascular risk.

Children and adolescents living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) frequently experience challenges related to bone health. Studies indicate that young people with T1D often have reduced bone mineral density, alongside changes in bone microarchitecture and lower rates of bone turnover when compared with healthy peers.
