Urine Antigen Detection

Urine Antigen Detection

ImmuView® S. pneumoniae and L. pneumophila Urinary Antigen Test

The SSI Diagnostica ImmuView® S. pneumoniae and L. pneumophila Urinary Antigen Test is a two-in-one rapid lateral flow test for qualitative detection of S. pneumoniae and L. pneumophila serogroup 1 in human urine samples. The test is effective in presumptive diagnosis of Legionella infection (Legionnaires’ Disease) caused by L. pneumophila serogroup 1 or pneumococcal pneumonia caused by S. pneumoniae in conjunction with culture and other methods.

Urine Antigen Detection

Bacteria are the most common cause of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), with Streptococcus pneumoniae isolated in nearly 50% of cases. A rapid diagnosis is essential as these infections can normally be treated with penicillin which is relatively inexpensive and does not induce antibiotic resistance at the same level as other antibiotics. Legionella has been found to be the causative agent in approximately 4% of cases. Penicillin is not effective against Legionella as it is an intracellular bacterium and treatment with antibiotics like macrolides or quinolones that penetrate the infected cells is required.

Correct and early treatment is vital for the prognosis of both diseases and therefore rapid methods to confirm both diseases in the initial phase are very important in order to initiate the proper antibiotic treatment as soon as possible.

NICE Guidelines [CG191] was published in December 2014

Pneumonia: Diagnosis and management of community- and hospital-acquired pneumonia in adults.

This guideline recommends that for patients with moderate or high severity community-acquired pneumonia blood and sputum cultures should be taken AND pneumococcal and legionella urinary antigen tests considered.
