Toxicology Mass Spectrometry - definition

The process of mass spectrometry involves the measurement of the mass-to-charge ratio of ions to identify and quantify molecules in simple and complex structures. An important application of this process is in the fields of clinical toxicology,  forensic toxicology and doping control. Compounds of many different chemical and pharmaceutical constructions can be screened rapidly and reliably to determine evidence and levels of toxicity and, in the world of sport, whether a substance is prohibited. In terms of occupational toxicology and safeguarding, mass spectrometry toxicology is used to detect levels of exposure to hazardous substances in specific workplace settings.

Forensic Toxicology - definition

Forensic toxicology deals with the investigation of toxic substances or poisonous products that may be present in bodily fluids and tissue samples. This may be part of a medical, legal or criminal investigation.

For more information about forensic toxicology, please refer to the The Forensics Library – Mass Spectrometry http://aboutforensics.co.uk/mass-spectrometry

Occupational Toxicology - definition

Occupational toxicology deals with the specific assessment of hazards posed by chemicals in the work environment. An occupational toxicologist will provide advice on risk assessments, safe handling and storage of chemicals, treatment of anyone exposed to a chemical. Occupational toxicology is relevant across a wide range of workplace settings including factories, bakeries (flour dust), hairdressers (hair dyes) and any location where biological or chemical agents are present.

Endocrinology - definition

Endocrinology is the study of hormones and a clinical endocrinologist will use endocrinology mass spectrometry kits to detect levels of key hormones in patients suspected of suffering from a range of conditions including diabetes, growth disorders, metabolic diseases, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and cancers of the endocrine glands.
